The best meal planning app for 2026: five compared

Some apps start with food already in your kitchen; others suit a recipe collection or a weekly calendar. Compare five options by features, household fit, and price.

A refrigerator stocked with everyday ingredients beside a phone and a handwritten weekly meal plan.

Pick the app that matches how you actually decide on dinner: from what's in the fridge, from a pile of saved recipes, or from a calendar on the wall. Choose pantry tracking and meal ideas if you want to use up food already at home; look for recipe importing if you’re building a library. For a household that shares the cooking or shopping, check that the calendar and grocery list sync across devices. Pantry Bliss is the fridge-first pick here, based on its listed features.

Prices and features reflect listings checked on October 3, 2026.

What makes a meal-planning app worth keeping

Start with the job you need done. Pantry tracking and meal ideas based on food nearing its date suit cooks who want to start with what’s in the kitchen. If you already know what you want to cook, a searchable recipe library and easy importing matter more. For a household with several cooks or shoppers, check that the plan and list sync across everyone’s devices.

If all you need is a grocery list, your phone’s Notes app is fine. Choose a meal-planning app when you want recipes connected to the list, a meal calendar, or a record of what’s in the kitchen. For shared shopping, make sure everyone can see and update the same list.

Start with what’s in the fridge

Pantry Bliss suits cooks who want dinner ideas shaped by what’s already in the kitchen. It tracks food and expiry dates, then uses what you have and what needs using first to suggest AI recipes. You can steer the suggestions toward what you feel like eating, too (features).

The app also lets you plan the week and share a shopping list that fills the pantry as items are ticked off. It imports recipes from a link or cookbook photo, and reads each step aloud in hands-free cook mode. Household costs $6.99 a month or $34.99 a year (until 30 November), with a 14-day trial on the yearly plan (features, pricing).

Pantry Bliss is made for iPhone and iPad. An Android version is coming soon (sign up to the waitlist).

Keep recipes organized with Paprika

If you save recipes from all over the web, Paprika gives them a searchable home. Its US iOS listing says saved recipes can be opened without a connection. The app also includes pantry tracking, meal planning, and grocery lists; its clearest fit is keeping a recipe collection in order. The listing is $4.99, with versions for each platform sold separately (Paprika on the App Store).

Plan the week on a calendar

Plan to Eat ties scheduled meals to recipes and a shopping list. Its App Store listing says recipes, plans, and lists sync across family members’ devices, a useful setup when one person plans and another shops or cooks (Plan to Eat on the App Store).

The service offers a 14-day free trial. Its pricing page lists $5.95 per month or $54.99 per year through the Apple App Store (Plan to Eat pricing, App Store listing).

Find recipes with Samsung Food

Samsung Food is a free app for recipe discovery and meal planning, with in-app purchases. Food+ adds AI-personalized recipes, meal plans, and ingredient-list recipe search. In the US, Food+ costs $6.99 a month or $59.99 a year, with a seven-day trial; Samsung says prices vary by country (Samsung Food App Store listing, Food+ details). Food+ is the better fit if you expect to search by ingredients already in the kitchen; the free app covers recipe discovery and meal planning.

Import recipes with Honeydew

Honeydew makes sense if you regularly save recipes from websites or social posts. Its US listing also mentions imports from screenshots and notes, household sharing, and automatic grocery lists. Plus is $6.99 a month or $39.99 a year on the listing, with regional price variation (Honeydew on the App Store). See our comparisons of Samsung Food and Honeydew.

If you use Mealime or Yummly

Mealime’s website says the app will shut down on October 21, 2026. As of October 3, 2026, that date is still ahead. Before then, screenshot or copy the recipes you want to keep, including ingredient lists and methods. Save your current week’s plan and shopping list as well. Use those copies to rebuild your plan in another app (Mealime). For step-by-step help, see our Mealime migration guide.

Yummly has already closed. A preserved discontinuation email dated November 26, 2024, said its website and mobile apps would shut down the following month and that selected content could be downloaded before December 20, 2024 (discontinuation notice).

FAQ

Does Samsung Food require a Food+ subscription?

No. The US App Store listing describes Samsung Food as free with in-app purchases; Food+ is a separate subscription (App Store listing, Food+ details). Check the subscription screen for the current price in your region before starting a trial.

Can a recipe app import a printed cookbook page?

Pantry Bliss can import a recipe from a photo of a printed cookbook page (features). Keep the page flat, photograph it straight on, and include the full ingredient list and method. Check the imported amounts against the page before you cook.

Can I still download recipes from Yummly?

The discontinuation notice said selected content could be downloaded before December 20, 2024. That window has passed. If you saved recipes elsewhere, check your browser bookmarks or the notes app where you may have copied them (discontinuation notice).
